Harald Ditlev & Frances Anna Eltzholtz

Harald Ditlev Eltzholtz, the second child born to Harald Louis Adolf and Mary Kate (Egan) Eltzholtz was born May 2, 1902 at Cedarhurst, L.I., NY and met his grandfather Ditlev with his father when Ditlev visited his 2 sons in USA late in 1905. Harald chose plumbing as a career and spent most of his life in the Montclair, NJ area.
.
Harald met Frances Anna Germaine sometime during the 1929 - 30s and they married on October 5, 1939 following a lengthly courtship. Mary Frances Eltzholtz Middleton identified those present at the reception as follows: To Harald's left side was his mother Mary Kate Egan Eltzholtz, then his sister Elizabeth (Dee Dee), then his brother and the twin to Elizabeth Edward (Bo) Eltzholtz, then his brother Joseph (Whitey) in the white shirt/tie. The young boy sitting in front is my cousin Billy Eltzholtz (age 4yr.) He is Peggy Dietrich's brother, Whitey's son.
.
The woman to the right of my mother is her mother Mary ("Mamie") Germaine. The man in front of her is my uncle, Jack Sweeney (Husband of Madeline Eltzholtz Sweeney). I believe my aunt Madeline (Harold's sister) is the woman who appears opposite Jack Sweeney at that table (she is partially cut off, and is wearing a light colored dress). The rest as far as we can determine must be friends.
.
A baby boy whose name is unknown was born and died in 1945. Mary Frances Eltzholtz was born April 20, 1947 and Jacqueline Ann Eltzholtz was born November 28, 1948. An adopted daughter Virginia Eltzholtz was born February 5, 1962.
.
Harald Ditlev Eltzholtz died April 26, 1969 and Frances Anna (Germaine) Eltzholtz died February 2, 1987.

The Family of Marie Louise Eltzholtz and Hans Christian Hansen

(l to r:) Max Leo, Marie Louise, Gudrun Elly, Axel, Carl Johan and Hans Christian Hansen
.
Hans Christian Hansen was born in Svendborg, Denmark November 20, 1870, was babtized in the Sct. Nicolai Church in 1871 and was confirmed in April, 1885. He was the son of Christoffer Hansen and wife Henriette Christensen.
.
Marie Louise Eltzholtz was born at glorup, Svindinge Sogn April 21, 1872, was baptized in the church July 5, 1872 then confirmed in Svinninge Church on October 3, 1886. She was the daughter of Ditlev Christian Ernst Eltzholtz and his wife Anne Dorthea Kopp Eltzholtz from Ringe, Denmark.
.
Hans Christian was a bachelor and a bookkeepper in Ringe during the time Marie Louise would have been working around her father's business, Ditlev Eltzholtz and Company, also in Ringe. No document that I'm aware of indicates just how or when they met or how long they courted, but in a small community like Ringe they would have found each other fairly quickly and their courtship would have probably been very public.
.
Marie Louise Eltzholtz and Hans Chrisian Hansen were married at Jesuskirken in Valby outside Copenhagen on November 7, 1897. They had four children Max Leo, born December 24, 1898, Carl Johan, born December 23, 1904, Axel, born November 15, 1906 and Gudrun Elly, born January 14, 1910.
.
The children, when baptized, were given the family name Eltzholtz Juel Hansen. There is still some confusion as to when and where the name Juel appeared for Hans Christian Hansen, the father. Axel Eltzholtz wrote to me in January, 1973 and told me that Ditlev had a great wish that the name Eltzholtz should continue in Denmark, but Otto Eltzholtz was on the way to becoming an old bachelor and therefore something needed to be done. Ditlev wrote a letter to King Christian the X who gave the permission on November 30, 1922 to delete the Juel Hansen from the certificates of baptism so the Eltzholtz name continues in Denmark to this day.

Carl Johan Eltzholtz and Hans Christian Hansen

Carl Johan Eltzholtz was born December 23, 1904 the second child of Marie Louise and Hans Christian Hansen. He married Ellen Margrethe Rasmussen, born June 19, 1910, on December 8, 1929 and they were blessed with three children, Erik Eltzholtz born June 13, 1930, Inge Birgit Eltzholtz born February 22, 1933 and Lis Eltzholtz born April 23, 1936. Carl Johan and Ellen Margrethe were divorced in 1944. They had 7 grand children and 12 great grandchildren.
.
Carl Johan remarried in 1947 to Emile Kruse and they had a son Tom Eltzholtz born November 19, 1947. There were two children born to Tom Eltzholtz and two grand children.

Catalog published by Ditlev Eltzholtz in 1905

Birgit Moeller visited the Royal Library in Copenhagen recently with her daughter Pernille and her grandson Lucas and they were able to view, and photograph some of the numerous catalogs and other publishings of Ditlev Eltzholtz. Ditlev sent out catalogues to his customers every year from 1865 - 1928 - 31. The Royal Library also had information regarding two books written by Ditlev; one about cultivations of tomatoes outdoors (1888), and one about sowing a grass field with a description of the most valuable clover and grass sorts (1885).
.
I asked Birgit to translate the catalog cover to English to make the reading a little easier for the American cousins including me. While I have been familiar with most of these words for some years the actual meaning of some came as a real surprize to me.
.
40. Aargang = volume. Ditlev started in 1865 so this would have been the 40th annual catalog.
.
Illustreret = Illustrated. I knew that one. The catalog contained drawings of the different objects.
.
Prisfortegneise = Price List - - - - - - - - fra = from.
.
Have & Markfroeforretning = Garden and Fieldseedbusiness. over = including.
.
Urte-,Blomster-,Conifera-, Palme-, Rodfrugtfroe og Graesfroeblandinger = Herbs,- Flowers,- Conifera (scientific name for coniferous tree family) - Palms, - Root crops seed and Grass seed mixings. samt = and.
.
Kloever og Graesfroe til Markbrug = Clover and Grass seed for the field.
.
Hvidtjoernsplanter m.m. = Hawthorn plants etc.
.
The picture of the two catalogs (1905 and the red cover to the right) indicates that they were professionally produced paper backed and from 1/4" to 3/16" thick. I would guess that the catalogs are at least 60 pages.

Back Cover of Catalog published in 1905

The back cover of Ditlev's catalog is also very well done and seems to convey cleanliness, quality and service to the customer. The upper views show a well stocked warehouse area and a tool demonstration space while the lover views show a retail sales area and the company offices. In the center at the far left is the family home where the business started, then the two seed houses that were built to handle the growth of the business. The cutaway of the newest seedhouse shows three levels of activity. Other pictures indicate the customer will receive products via wagon, rail or ship. The frontispiece (area over the family home with 2 verticle windows) was the area where Ditlev spent his final days after willing his business and worldly assets to Marie Louise and Hans Christian in return for Ditlev's care throughout the remainder of his life.

Medals and Ribbons awarded to Ditlev Eltzholtz

Birgit Moeller translated the text to English as follows:

.
Forskellige Udmaekelser = Honour or distinction.
.
Som er tikendt Forretningen = which is awarded the business.
.
Den indre Krans er Soelvmedaljer = The centre wreath are Silver medals.
.
Den ydre er Broncemedaljer = The outer are Bronze medals.
.
Guidmedaille Neapel = Gold Medal, Napels (Italian town)

During the 29 years from 1875 to 1904 Ditlev Eltzholtz and Company was awarded 34 medals including 2 Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals and 19 Bronze Medals during competitions in Faaborg, Denmark; Malmo, Sweden; Naples, Italy; St. Petersborg, Russia; Kobehavn, Denmark and Odense, Denmark.

No documents that I am aware of indicate how often these competitions were offered or how many Ditlev entered or in what categories his entries were made. Ditlev was awarded 5 medals in 1880 at competition in Copenhagen and 5 medals in 1884 also at Copenhagen. 4 medals were awarded at Odense in 1881 and 3 medals each at St. Petersborg in 1899, Malmo in 1900, Odense in 1900 and Copenhagen in 1884. 2 medals were awarded at Odense in both 1885 and 1904 and 1 medal was awarded in 1891 at Faaborg, Denmark.
